The Chattanooga Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has joined in a partnership with Lights On Schools of Hamilton County
Schools, The National Science Foundation/Hamilton County Schools, The Challenger
Center at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (UTC), Theta Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at UTC, and The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program to help students and their
parents develop effective ways to support children's' informal and formal
science and mathematics learning experiences. This program is called "Girls in Flight". There are twenty-two (22) seventh-grade girls and their parents from
six Hamilton County Schools participating in the Girls in Flight Program.
Through this partnership, students and their parents are provided with
a Laptop Computer, Internet Service, NASA flight gear, transportation,
meals (breakfast and lunch), Science World magazines, and all materials
needed for the activities and initiatives. Mentors are also provided for
both students and parents.
Chattanooga Alumnae Chapter's Project SEE (Science in Everyday Experiences)
Committee has committed to its partners to: attend mentorship training; serve as
mentors for parents of students in Girls in Flight program; Provide parental
involvement science and math support for the parents; and attend all Saturday
sessions.
The Project SEE Committee meets with parents from September through April on the third Saturday
of each month to conduct science workshops, science labs, and lectures
known as "Delta Lab". Also, the Project SEE Committee along with students and parents perform an environmental community service
project in partnership with the City of Chattanooga, Storm Water Management
Division.
