Making a Difference Through Cultural Awareness
The Arts & Letters Committee strives to boldly advance the black experience by highlighting the artistic contributions of African-American people of the past and present elevating them to public attention through the medium of music, dance, drama, and poetry. Through a variety of activities and events, including Delta Red Carpet/theatre trips, concerts, book groups, painting, and art shows, this committee encourages meaningful cultural pursuits and talented African American artists.
In 2013, a grant was awarded to the Chattanooga Alumnae Chapter by the City of Chattanooga for the Smart Girls Community Arts Program. SmART Girls was an initiative designed to expose 50 girls residing within the urban core of Chattanooga to local arts venues and resources that they do not attend due to financial limitations, faulty perceptions, or other barriers. Participants toured, enjoyed performances, and had hands-on experiences at The Bessie Smith Cultural Center, The Hunter Museum of American Art, The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Ballet Tennessee.
